It’s Gay Art Time

I just found Felix D’Eon today, and I’m really excited about it! This piece is the first of his works I saw, and I knew immediately I had found something new and compelling. I was first struck by how this scene reminds me of the murals by Mark Beard at the Abercrombie & Fitch flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
While Beard’s work is heavily homoerotic, expressed in late 19th and early 20th Century English and French styles, D’Eon introduces period Latin and especially Mexican artistic references. What he does particularly well is to introduce open homosexuality into traditional, homey scenes.
Here, everything about the image is of a 1930s-vintage book illustration or postcard. The couple are engaging in oral sex, not in hiding, not as outlaws, but freely naked and in the open. The image is at the same time explicit and mainstream.
