Robert Bliss, Portrait of a Nude Boy, 1971. Most recently sold in 2006 to a private collector. While Bliss usually made composite portraits, which include parts of two or more boys, I have good reason to believe that this is (was) me (basically), with somewhat neater hair than I usually had. This is my skin tone, and presented as only a little more muscularly defined than I was then. Other details are definitely like mine (!). I graduated from school in 1971.
I remember posing for him at his chaotic house a block off the beach in Hull, Massachusetts. He was working a painting on a board, with a purple background (purple got all over).
I knew well what to expect when I was with him, and he expected it –that’s how it worked then. I understand that he has been named retrospectively by boys whom he hurt while he taught at the Deerfield Academy, and I feel bad for them. I never felt hurt by him; in fact, he was very clear what he wanted, which made everything easier.
For the record, this is my 25,000th post on this tumblr blog.
It’s Gay Art Time
Portrait of a Nude Boy by Robert R. Bliss, 1971
Seldom do we get a look behind the painting as @stillrowing7-posingforart does above. A friend of mine has a couple of Bliss works. He knew one of the previous owners of this one.
